Excerpt
Theron tugged on his jacket and strolled up the sidewalk to Violet’s house. Maybe a little on the formal side. It was a little warm for the jacket, but too formal was better than too casual. He wouldn’t give her any reason to believe he was playing games. They’d gotten a rocky start, but she intrigued him.
He rang the bell and stepped back. No need to crowd her at the door. He reached up and ran his finger around his collar. It seemed tighter than before. He rubbed his sweating palms on his pants leg and took a few deep breaths to calm his racing heart. A first date had never been this nerve racking before.
The door opened. She stepped forward. A purple dress clung to her upper body and flowed around her legs. His breath caught in his throat. That fabric hugged her curves in much the same places he’d like to stroke and kiss.
“Hello, Violet, you look beautiful tonight.” Theron swept his gaze from her glistening lips down to her strappy high heels. If this wasn’t a first date, he might suggest staying in tonight.
“Thank you. You look fabulous yourself.” She reached to the side and grabbed her purse. “I’m ready to go when you are.”
“I thought dinner and then I’d take you dancing.” He extended his hand and waited as she stepped out and locked her door.
“That sounds wonderful. It’s been a while since I went dancing.” She slipped her hand into his.
He tightened his fingers on hers. A flare of warmth spread through him. Damn, whatever this was between them, it blazed with strength. “Then we’ll both relearn at the same time.”
“I guess you didn’t have much time to get to know people when you traveled.” She looked over at him and grimaced.
“No, not much time with other Aelfir aside from the Hunters and a good many of them would have decked me if I’d asked them to dance.” He winked at her. Maybe it would give her a little amusement. A Hunter’s life was lonely, but he hadn’t had any illusions when he joined.
She laughed. “Yeah, the Hunters I met over the years would not have responded well to that. A more macho bunch of men I’ve never met.”
“There are a few female Hunters, but they tend to be more focused on the job than even the men.” He drew her to his car and opened the passenger door. She slid in and buckled her seatbelt.
He closed the door and went around the car. Those little bits only teased him. He took a deep breath before he tugged at the latch of his own door. The mystery drew him almost as much as the attraction. That might not be a good thing. She might be a woman he wouldn’t forget even if what was between them didn’t work out.
“I’ve never met a female Hunter.” She frowned.
“You probably have and just didn’t know it. They don’t go around talking about it as some men do. From what I’ve heard, it can put off men who might be interested in them.” He shrugged. If she’d met Ciara, she’d met a former female Hunter. That was Ciara’s secret to tell if she decided to reveal it.
“Hmm, I guess it could intimidate a man who works in an office to know that the woman he’s dating used to hunt the things that haunt our nightmares.” Her head tilted to the side.
“And does it intimidate you?” He glanced over at her before he started the car.
“No, not with you. You just made me laugh. I told you I’ve met Hunters and ex-Hunters before. Yes, a couple of them did make me a little wary, but it wasn’t the fact that they’d hunted the worst of us and other things I don’t want to think about. It was their intensity.” She reached over and touched his arm. “Plus the fact that you came and asked me to lunch and then dinner. I like a man who can face things head on and admit that he made a mistake.”
“Well, I did make a mistake.” He nodded and drove to the restaurant. Yes, the intensity some men had could be offputting. A few men seemed to walk the edge. “But once I found out the good news, I was going to do my best to make sure that I rectified it.”
He parked in front of the Jake’s and walked around the car. The door clicked and pushed open. He rushed forward and helped her out. Independent woman. Had she never had someone to pamper and spoil her? He’d like to do that.
“Come on. I’d like to learn a little more about you.” He curved an arm around her and guided her up to the doors.
“I’d like that, too.” She leaned into him.
