I’m currently writing, well trying to get back into writing after a hiccup, but I’ve also pulled out an old manuscript that I’d put to the side. It’s finished, but there was something a little off with it which kept me from submitting it. I knew it needed major work, but never could put my finger on what exactly needed to fixed so I let it sit.
Realizing what was holding back one of the characters in another project gave me a hint about what might be wrong with this manuscript. So I’m in the process of taking it apart ripping away the broken parts and putting it back together in a hopefully better arrangement.
At the moment, I’ve read through it again. It’s been a long time since I’ve touched it so it was almost as if I was reading a new book. I was able to identify a few weak spots right off. Wrote them down on the legal pad I’m using for physical random notes and to do lists at the moment, although earlier in the month it would have been a spiral.
Cue heavy equipment and construction hats, because this is going to be ugly. The beginning almost completely gone. The heroine–getting a new attitude, new history, new way of life, new way to act because she was simply too nice, too accepting, too BLAND. And that will be the beginning. The heroes need a little roughing up–too nice and not enough character. The plot needs a little more conflict, both interpersonal and physical.
I also need to go over this and make sure I haven’t reused the names, specifically group names, in other books written since then. I have a suspicion I’ve done this and I’ll need to rename because this is not connected to any other story.
On the easier side of things, I’m making progress (even if it has been slower than I want lately) in all the WIP I’ve been working on, although I’m thinking of altering my schedule now. I’ll leave it as it is for the moment while I give it more thought. I’ve even managed to get some hand writing done on the Bears WIP. Soon, I will share a snippet of the bears world.
Until next time,
Happy Reading
