Familiar Research

I always wonder about the research authors of some of my favorite books. I thought I’d share some of the research I did while I was writing Familiar Desires. Generally, I let the story flow and then go back and fill in some of the details.

Some things though I had to know while I was writing. A lot of the information never made it into the book, but it helped me solidify the world around the shifters and wizards.

I couldn’t seem to get Michael and Kane’s house right as I wrote it. So I spent some time looking for house layouts for the mountain home. I studied them until I found the one that suited the two men.

I also researched the layout of the police station in the book. Because honestly, I had no idea how the areas of a police station should be situated. I took a little license with it, but stayed as true to the sketch as I could.

Ski resorts and the nearby towns that supported them were also on my list of research. I had no idea what the citizens of Devoe would do when there wasn’t snow on the ground and what would bring in money in the other three seasons.

There were other smaller things that didn’t require as much time. Some investigation into animals and plants. I also looked into the traditional familiar/witch relationship even though I knew from the start that these Familiars, Witches and Wizards had a much more symbiotic relationship than that.

So, authors, what research do you do?
