It’s the start of January. It’s the time when we all think about what we want to happen over the next few months. In December, I began thinking about what I wanted to accomplish in 2014, because I made my goal for 2013.
My goals for last year were pretty loose and I didn’t talk about them with anyone. This year, I’m doing things a little differently. I’ve defined my goals a little more. According some of the articles I’ve read, solid goals instead broad goals are better and more likely to be followed through to the finish. I’ve also broken down the larger goals into smaller chunks to make the goal not seem so mountainous. I’ve made a simple table that lists the goal, even the smaller subgoals and has a spot where I can check it off once I’ve completed it. And now, I’m talking about them publicly to make myself more accountable.
To start off, I need to finish the edits to Familiar Desires. I’m working on those tonight so I’ll be able to tick those off my list soon. I also want to finish the WIP that I’m working on right now. LC, the Protective Affairs WIP, the Sword and Sorcery WIP. And the Rana WIP, I want to find a way to get those characters back on track. They’re driving me crazy with the contradictory directions they’re wanting to go. I might not finish that this year, since it might take a rewrite to get them to work on the same page and it’s going to be a long book anyway, but I’m going to try.
When I get a spot in my WIP line up, I’ll start one of the stories on my list. When I finish LC, which is turning more mid-length than short story, I need to get an actual short story going. The next opening will be for a story I’ve been wanting to write for a while, but needed to solidify the plot. The characters were already there. I’m talking about the Ardin introduced in Lost Memories and their lady Brie. As well as that, I’ve got another Protective Affairs (set in Dallas) story lined up with some characters who I like, Delilah and Hallinger.
There are also stories I want to work on getting more of the conflict, characters and plot worked out. (Unless they’re short stories, I won’t be plotting them out, but I do want to have a sense of what’s going on with them.) One of them is a gargoyle story with a character who won’t shut up.
And more if I can get to it. I’ve planned a lot of work for this year, so I better start working on whittling down that to do list.
